The name of “Chongqing” was entitled as Gongzhou prefecture by emperor Guangzong of Southern Song Dynasty in 1189. The primary meaning of “Chongqing” had two aspects, one was “between Shaoqing and Shunqing” which named later than “Chongqing”; the other was “double happiness” while with no relative historical records. However, they both didn’t match the historical records. Guangzong was so depressed after he became an emperor, so the predilection towards “Chong” coincided personal reason and historical background. This paper researched on the name of “Chongqing”, which came from the literary quotation The Book of Songs, was the root of meaning.
