Abstract:From literary criticism to theoretic construction is one of poetics production patterns. Liu Xie did his writing works from the perspective of ‘Zong Jing’, attaching particular importance to the critiquing and expounding of The Book of Songs. Not only did he regard The Book of Songs as the foundation of stylistics, the model of literary creation and the criterion of literary criticism, but he adapted The Book of Songs’ linguistic style to express his poetic theory. Through this interpreting, Liu Xie advanced the literary aesthetics of ‘graceful elegancy’ and summarized some important literary creation ways like ‘to create for the sake of emotions,’ to use ‘Bi Xing’ ( one of writing techniques promoted in The Book of Songs),’ and ‘to seize more in few’ and so on. As such, Liu Xie’s success in developing his poetics out of his interpretation of The Book of Songs offers a typical case study for Chinese literary theoretical development.
