Abstract:“The Tale of Two Cities” formed by Beijing and Nanjing in Zhang Henshui’s novels shows the different urban landscapes and social spaces of the two ancient cities, and outlines the unique connection between “city and people”. In Fu of Two Capitals, Zhang Henshui explores the aesthetic and humanistic characteristics of Beijing and Nanjing, and builds a cultural space of “Two Capitals”, showing the rustic atmosphere, artistic style and humanistic temperament of the two capitals far removed from urban modernity. Taking into account Zhang Henshui’s creative situation and external environment in different historical periods, Beijing and Nanjing in Zhang Henshui’s works can be regarded as a time-space body which implies the transformation and changes of modern Chinese society, history, and culture.
