It was a discussion about main theoretical issues, including poetic essence, poetry and writers, poetic function, the changes of poetry and poetry criticism, instead of specific poetic methods. The dispute focused on Du Fu’s poems, notes on poets and poetry Cang Lang by Yan Yu, Song poetry and the Jingling school. Therefore, the dispute between Tang and Song poetry in the Qing Dynasty is by no means a simple question of mentoring strategy, but the value orientation of the concept of traditional poetics, just like poem expressing ideal, orthodoxy of temperament, classical poetic formal distinctions, the blandness, orthodoxy or heterodoxy, imitation or change, learning, exposition,comparison and affective image, and so on. These concepts can be constructed logically from the perspective of literary history and the poet subject as the starting point. It is the typical case that the dilemma and settlement of orthodoxy of temperament.
