Abstract:The Epitaph of Li Zhan and other records indicate that during the late Kaiyuan and early Tianbao periods, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang expanded the membership of the imperial clan. This event had a significant impact at the time, and many epitaphs listed it as the first sign of an elevated status. Li Bai was influenced by this event; his entry to the capital in the first year of Tianbao might be related to it. After leaving the capital in the third year of Tianbao, he directly sought out Li Yanyun, who was allowed to join the imperial clan due to the expansion policy. Before this, Li Bai only mentioned his ancestry as “the Li family of Longxi”, but later often referred to himself as a descendant of the King of Liang and Xiuwu. After the second year of Tianbao, the Taoist priests in the imperial observatories were transferred from the jurisdiction of the imperial clan to the Ministry of Personnel’s Department of Ranks, entering the official selection system. Li Bai asked Li Yanyun, a high-ranking member of the imperial clan, to introduce him to receive the Taoist ordination and enter the Taoist register, also expressing his aspiration to obtain a position in the imperial observatories. Placing the relevant works in this context reveals not only the inequality and oppression Li Bai suffered under the system of noble status but also his spirit of continuous striving and perseverance.
