Abstract:With the advent of the digital age, capitalism has entered the stage of digital capitalism. The spectacle strategy in the process of capitalist modernization is further manifested in the order construction and daily-life performance of digital spectacles. Such digital spectacles embody paradoxes of freedom versus monopoly, democracy versus autocracy, pluralism versus monolithism, and integration versus separation at the economic, political, cultural and social-relation levels. In the digital age, China has blazed a distinctive path of Chinese-style modernization. By advancing the development of socialism with Chinese characteristics as a whole in dimensions including the digital economy, digital-technology-enabled whole-process people’s democracy, digital culture and the digital community with a shared future, China has achieved transcendence over the Western society of the spectacle which is centered on the logic of capital accumulation, with the people-oriented development logic as its core. This transcendence is concretely reflected in: the transcendence of people-centered development over capital-centered development; the transcendence of people being masters of the country over the autocracy of the ruling class; the transcendence of cultural confidence over value discipline; and the transcendence of a community with a shared future for mankind over internal social fragmentation. At present, upholding this transcendence that demonstrates Chinese characteristics and strengths helps China drive modernization through digitalization, and carries great practical significance for accelerating the building of a “Digital China” and the modernization of socialism with Chinese characteristics.
